Decisions. Placement - Many levels of care are available today: home care, retirement living, respite care, assisted living, rehab centers, and skilled nursing facilities. The level of care and who provides that care will be determined in part by the loved ones abilities to perform "Activities of Daily Living," (ADL), their medical condition, your financial resources, and your desire to have them live with you or in a facility. Click here for more information about choosing a facility. Legal and Medical Documents - Nursing homes will ask for documentation concerning end-of-life decisions. These will include any documents drawn up by an attorney including a Durable Power of Attorney and Power of Attorney for Health Care. They will also request that you make a decision concerning a Do Not Recusitate, (DNR) order. It is better to discuss this topic with your loved one and family members while they are able to make decisions. Nourishment and Water - The time may come when your loved one no longer wants to eat. It is hard to admit that their body is failing and no longer desiring food. It is helpful to understand that when their digestive system is shutting down, they are not in pain; and in fact, food or water may cause distress to their system. Your physician and care staff can explain more about this.
