Selecting a Care Facility: Finding the "right" facility is a lot like looking for a home for yourself. When you walk into the facility how does it "feel?" Is this a place that you feel comfortable in and would you choose this place for yourself? Location is important. Will it be convenient for you to get to. The family being close is of great value and this consideration must be weighed against the level of service provided. Size and Cost. If there are several facilities to choose from, make a list of those to be considered. Call each one and make an appointment to visit them. Ask questions. Ask about the cost per room, if they accept Medicaid patients, and if there are beds available. Narrow Your Choice. There is no "perfect" facility. They cannot replace living at home, or the level of care you yourself would provide. In other words, you will have to make the best choice from the two or three facilities, visit them again, both scheduled and unannounced. If possible, take your loved one with you to make them feel like they are part of the decision process. Then pick one. It's not uncommon for families to pull their loved one in and out of facilities trying to find the "best" one. Try to avoid that. It's hard on the family and more importantly it is very hard on your loved one. Regardless of what facility you pick, your role, as a family, in the care of your loved one is extremely important, and will take time and commitment on your part to see that they are receiving the care and love that they need. Please don't tell the staff how to do their job, instead get to know them, get them to know your loved one, and that will go along way to insure that your loved one is getting good care. | Back |
