Athletes and Elders

The University of Nebraska at Omaha Athletic Department and Desert Ministries have partnered to "match" athletic teams with care facilities throughout the Omaha area.

Desert Ministries begins its fourth year as partners with The University of Nebraska at Omaha, helping “match” UNO athletic teams with care facilities throughout the Omaha area.

Advised by Lyn Holley, University of Nebraska at Omaha Gerontology Professor,  and student led by Marietta Sewell and Aby Zuniga, graduate and undergraduate gerontology students of UNO along with Desert Ministries acting as community partner, UNO Athletes and Elders is the first of its kind nationally.

For the fall of 2011, UNO athletic teams will be visiting area senior facilities, while the activities of each team will vary. Teams and coaches will visit the facilities and talk with the frail, institutionalized older adults throughout the school year. The participating older adults will also be encouraged to follow the UNO athletic teams as the year progresses.

Specifically, the program was designed with the intent to help students become more aware of the power of inter-generational relationships, help develop a positive view of aging and help elders connect with the next generation.

Here are a couple recent pictures of the UNO swim team visiting a local care facility.
