We Produce Quality Volunteers
At this time, Desert Ministries has over 200 volunteers of its own in 40 facilities throughout Omaha and Council Bluffs. These volunteers provide one-on-one companionship to frail, institutionalized older adults, and to the staff.
Desert Ministries accepts only the finest of volunteers to serve as companions to this vulnerable group. In fact, we look to see if our applicant understand five key concepts before we allow them entrance into our training program. These are:
Community – Selflessness – Presence – Compassion – Commitment
If we find individuals who value these concepts we feel as if we have found great potential for people who will make quality volunteers in the long-term care community.
We Produce Training Materials
At Desert Ministries we create training materials that assist in the production of better, more compassionate volunteers. These materials, combined with the methodology used, encourages the volunteer and gives each volunteer the education needed to enter the long-term care facility and hit the ground running.
Our materials are comprehensive, using state-of-the-art methods and employing all four learning styles to keep the student engaged throughout the training process.
We Produce Opportunities for the Community
Desert Ministries offers opportunities for the community to get involved in the case for the frail, institutionalized older adult. Desert Ministries does everything in its power to collaborate with as many institutions as possible to gain a greater grasp of the community.
Therefore, Desert Ministries collaborates with colleges, high schools, churches and many other organizations to get people involved.
We want people to see what is happening inside of nursing homes and we want people to join our cause.
Kerri Nikunen opens "Christmas in Our Hearts"
Every year Desert Ministries promotes several events to keep the community engaged and keep frail, institutionalized older adults feeling significant.
One such event is Christmas in Our Hearts.
This event was created particularly with the frail, institutionalized older adult in mind. However, without community involvement, this event simply cannot happen.
Annually, Christmas in Our Hearts is held at the Doubletree in Downtown Omaha. During this afternoon we pamper these seniors with a time of beautiful Christmas music and turn the Grand Ballroom into a Winter Wonderland.
We Offer Each a Chance to Get Involved
