Volunteer Profile

Bill Robinson

My name is Bill and I just turned 65.  I have been a Desert Ministries volunteer at Lindenwood Nursing Home since December 2001.  Both of my parents, now deceased, were in nursing homes and while they were there I noticed that there were many residents that didn't have ANYONE to visit them.

I know my folks didn't like being in a home and having to be totally dependent on the staff but........... After about 6 months after my parents passed away, the Holy Spirit nudged me and reminded me of those residents who didn't have anyone and more importantly, someone to share the love of Jesus in their last days.

I didn't know what I was getting into or even if I was equipped to do anything but I do know that HE strengthens me to do all things in His name.  Armed with that reminder, I ventured out.  Right off the bat, I met a lady who has no living relatives and has no desire to eat food.

She loves to work word puzzles and I bring those to her and colored pens too.  She has a great spirit about her but she’s never been much for church.  She does ask me from time to time, “What’s going to happen to me?”  I try to answer her questions as best I can.  When I leave she always asks me to pray the Lord’s Prayer with her, so I do.  Aside from me there is only one other friend that comes to visit her but not often.

I’m really her only friend now.  She just celebrated her 87th birthday but instead of cake, she was fed with a tube.  Knowing her and being able to help her and to bring some comfort to her has given me a sense of purpose and usefulness.  I believe that when I am visiting her, I am visiting Jesus.  I have a lot of stories to tell but I can't do that in the space I have here.  I'm glad I was obedient to do what the Spirit said and now the blessings I receive are multiplied many times over by those I come in contact with at Lindenwood.  If you want to talk with me or have any questions I can answer, let me know.
