Volunteer Profile

Rob Stargel

I spend about 1 hour per week visiting with Ed and more time working with Desert Ministries in other capacities.

Visiting Ed puts my life in perspective.  Ed has made me realize how much more important relationships are than accomplishments or things.  He is open and honest with me about life, sometimes just plain frank.  I realize how much my everyday relationships stay on the surface by how quickly I have gotten to know a lot about Ed.  I wish all my relationships were like this one.

I just try my best to be an intellectual challenge to Ed.  He is brilliant and has an unbelievable memory.  I think he sees me as someone that appreciates his opinions on politics, sports and the crazy world in which we live.

I would recommend volunteering with Desert Ministries to anyone.  There is an untapped resource of information, advice, lessons learned and a listening ear to anyone who will take an hour out of their week.

After I found Christ as my savior, I set out to find "religion".  I found it in the book of James where he says "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress".  This includes our elders in their distress of loneliness.
