Volunteer Profile

Elizabeth Weisser

Hillcrest Nursing Home seems to be a popular spot for our volunteers.  Located in Bellevue, they have a rehabilitation unit, a nursing facility and an Alzheimer’s unit. We have five volunteers there currently.  They do nails, visit in the Alzheimer’s unit, and visit their friends in their rooms or in one of the many little living rooms.

Elizabeth Weisser has been volunteering at Hillcrest for a year and a half. She visits on Wednesday afternoons and brings with her a joy that comes from deep within her.  You see Elizabeth has mild cerebral palsy. As a result, she has difficulty walking and also has a visual impairment.  Elizabeth appreciates, as do the residents, the large print music books they have at the facility.  She is in her element when she is leading music for the residents.  She feels God has blessed her and even though life can be difficult sometimes, she praises God for all He has given her.

While visiting Hillcrest, Elizabeth met Deanne.  Deanne was visiting an old friend that was a resident.  It turned out that Deanne plays the piano.  Now what do you think of that as a coincidence?  Elizabeth just happened to need someone to play the keyboard for her.  Thus the friendship began.  They have a group of ten to fifteen residents that love to come and sing a long to the old hymns. Elizabeth says, "Their favorite hymn is ‘Amazing Grace.’"  The person Deanne was visiting has since passed on but Elizabeth and Deanne remain good friends and together conduct the music every week.

There are several friends that enjoy Elizabeth's company.  She has two friends named Frances, and Evelyn, all of whom look forward to Elizabeth's visits.  She sometimes helps with crafts and has learned beading jewelry and just last week she helped with making paper Halloween hats.

Daisy, one of Elizabeth's friends, was skeptical and at first unwilling to make a connection with Elizabeth.  She evidently was used to people not coming back and told Elizabeth so.  After returning several times Elizabeth said that Daisy now looks forward to her visits. Daisy sometimes says she is not a good person, but Elizabeth says that she reminds her that she is special and God loves her and so does Elizabeth.

Elizabeth can't drive because of her disabilities, but that doesn't stop her from doing what God has called her to do.  It is easy to see she loves her friends at Hillcrest and they love her. It is such a blessing to see people like Elizabeth in action.
